Rhythm of French Installation
(This file is on the ROF CD-ROMs>
Installation:
Please follow the checklist below in order to install The Rhythm of
French. Throughout the text below, we use the convention 'C:' for
your primarily hard drive, and 'D:' for your CD-ROM drive; please
substitute your drive letters for your machine configuration if required.
1) Run the D:SETUP.EXE file from the CD-ROM by double-clicking
the file.
2) The Install Rhythm of French window will appear. Verify
that the install directory (C:Salix) is acceptable; change it if
necessary. Then, click the Full-Install button.
3) Install will create the directory C:Salix and copy various
files to this directory.
4) You will then be asked "Do you want to create Program Manager
groups?"; Click the Yes button.
5) If you are asked "Should new Program Manager groups replace
existing duplicate groups?", click the Yes button. This message is
not given for an initial installation.
6) Wait for the Building Tables graph to complete.
7) The "Administration Access - Course Installation" window will
now appear. The text of the window will tell you that you should
enter your first name, last name, login name, and a password. The
password must be composed of all alphabetic characters; no numeric
digits please! DO NOT FORGET YOUR NEW LOGIN NAME AND PASSWORD.
This login name (user id) and password is used for course administration
functions. Should you ever do forget, you will have to de-install
the Rhythm of French and Install it again; in this case all existing
student data will be lost.
8) Next, a window will say to Please enter the pathname of your
sound card mixer program. This is the name of the executable file
which controls sound volume for the sound card on your machine. This
program is executed whenever you click the Audio button in the Rhythm of
French. Typically, this name is something like "C:\windows\sndvol32.exe"
for Windows95 or "C:\sb16\winappl\ctmixer.exe" for Windows 3.1. If
you do not know the name of this executable file, just leave the
line blank for now and click the OK button. Later, after you find
out the name, you can edit the "C:\Salix.ini" file and supply the correct
value for the variable "MixerPN".
9) You will now see a window that says "You may now execute the
course by double-clicking the Student icon! Would you like to execute
the course now?" Click the Yes button, which will execute the Student
Access program.
10) Under the Student Access program, you will see the full outline
for The Rhythm of French. Click the first line for the first lesson.
Lesson 1, will then be loaded and executed.
Re-Installation:
Should you ever decide to re-install the Rhythm of French, you should
follow the same procedures documented above for Installation. The
only difference for a re-installation may be that the "Administrator Access
- Course Installation" window will prompt you for the login name and password
that you originally used when you first installed the course.
If you have forgotten this login name and password, follow the procedures
for De-Installation and then Installation; you can then enter a new
login name and password.
De-Installation:
The installation of the Rhythm of French creates several directories
which require about 11MB of disk space. If you ever need to remove
the Rhythm of French or install it again from scratch, you must first delete
the files and directories initially created during the first installation.
The files and directories which you must remove, if present, include:
C:\WINDOWS\SALIX.INI
C:\SALIX (directory)
If you do NOT have a separate license to Asymetrics
Multimedia Toolbook, remove the following files:
C:\WINDOWS\ASYM.INI
C:\WINDOWS\ASYMCBT.INI
C:\WINDOWS\MTB30.INI (if present)
C:\MTB30 (directory, if present)
C:\WINDOWS\ASYM (directory)
and in the C:\WINDOWS\WIN.INI file, delete
the two lines which resemble:
TBK=C:\MTB30\TBLOAD.EXE ^.TBK
SBK=C:\MTB30\TBLOAD.EXE ^.SBK
When you have removed these files and directories, follow the Installation
procedures above.
Installation on a Network:
You may use The Rhythm of French on a network such as in a networked
language lab if and only if you have purchased the appropriate number of
copies to license your networked workstations. To install The Rhythm
of French on a network, follow the Installation procedures given
above except specify that the 'Salix' directory be placed on a network
shared hard disk.
Install The Rhythm of French CD-ROM from the shared CD-ROM drive from
which it will be used on the network. In step 2 of the Installation
procedures above, substitute the name of your shared disk (for drive
c). When the installation process asks for the location of the "c:\Salix"
directory; change the 'c' to a shared drive letter such as in
"s:\Salix" (here is assumed that the shared drive is drive 's').
After installation, make sure that the following files in the Windows
directory, ASYM.INI, ASYMCBT.INI, MTB30.INI, and SALIX.INI, all refer
to the shared drive and not the 'C' drive. Make sure that both the
SALIX and MTB30 directories are all visible from your workstations on a
shared hard disk.
In order to access The Rhythm of French CD-ROM, it must also be inserted
in the shared logical drive from which it was installed.
Please contact Salix Technical Support if your local network support
staff are unable to properly configure The Rhythm of French for network
operation.
Operation/Administrator
Access:
The Rhythm of French provides a full course management system.
The course management capabilities include:
=> Organize courses of students controlled by an administrator
=> Maintain a database of students
=> Provide password protected access to the course
=> Enroll students in the Rhythm of French course
=> Track student progress thru the Rhythm of French
The primary program for managing Rhythm of French courses is the Admin
program.
To execute the Admin program, double-click the Admin icon in the Rhythm
of French program group. Enter the Admin login id and password, which
you originally created when you installed the Rhythm of French.
The Admin program will provide capabilities to do the following:
Users - Maintain a database of students and other
professors or
administrators; set login ids and passwords
Assignments - Assign students to Rhythm of French
courses
Activity - Review student activity through the Rhythm
of French
Extensive directions for using the Admin program are provided by the
Help buttons in Admin windows. Just execute it and browse through
the Help files in order to learn more.
Note that the capability to print reports is not automatically enabled
in the Admin program. We find that installing the ability to print
is a little complex, and for most installations, not used. In most
cases, you do have the capability to export reports to a disk file which
can then be printed by the text processing program of your choice (such
as Windows NotePad). If you need to enable the capability to print
reports, please contact Salix for instructions.
Hint: If you, as the administrator, would like to allow arbitrary
students to check out the Rhythm of French CD-ROM and take the course without
going through the trouble of setting up each student with a user id and
password, try creating a generic user id of 'Anonymous' with password 'None'.
This user id and password can then be used by any student who you give
the anonymous/none userid/password to. This will be very convenient
for you and the students. The only disadvantage is that progress
and quiz results will not be kept individually by student.
Operation/Student Access:
Students gain access to the Rhythm of French through the Student program.
A student should first double-click the Student icon in the Rhythm
of French program group. By entering his or her login id and password,
a student can directly load any unit of the Rhythm of French, take any
other course or review activity records.
To take the Rhythm of French course, click any unit of the Rhythm of
French displayed in the course outline.
Extensive directions for using the Student program are provided by
the Help buttons in Student windows. Just click the Courses button
in order to enter the full Student program, find the help button, and browse
through the Help files in order to learn more.
Misc. Operation:
The Rhythm of French operation is very straightforward. Basic

to play and record sounds, or traverse lesson material.
Four buttons provide basic operation:

you can control sound
and microphone volume.
Jump - Jumps to the Table of Contents, Exit and Prize
buttons

Prize - Students can choose prizes, which consist
of French graphics and
sound; prizes come with comprehensive French speech
which the student can practice pronouncing.

Clicking areas of active text replays sounds. Active text is
also used to switch sections within the Table of Contents. You can
recognize active text because the mouse icon changes to a hand when placed
over active text fields. Furthermore, the fields are usually, but
not always, colored mauve. Typically, blue text fields are not active.
Click the Help button in the first lesson for examples of active text and
other controls.
Operation/Prizes:
Prizes provide students comprehensive French pronunciation practice
as well as interesting information about French culture.
Students earn points as they progress through lessons. They can
use these points to purchase random prizes in various topics. Each
prize contains pictures, text, and sound.
Students can select French words or phrases with which to compare their
recorded pronunciation to the original.
When selected, each prize first displays a picture and a top row of
the following buttons:
Done - Quits this prize and returns to the prize
menu
Play - Plays the French sound from the beginning
Story - Switches the display from the picture to
text; provides recording
controls for pronunciation practice
English - Switches the text from French to English;
the French sound
is still played, however.
After clicking the Story button in a prize, the text corresponding
to the French sound is displayed along with recording controls for pronunciation
practice. These controls include the following buttons:
Pause - To pause the sound temporarily
Mark Phrase Start - To mark the starting point in
the French sound where
you would like to begin practice pronunciation.
This button
then changes to Mark Phrase End which you should click
to mark the ending point in the French sound that you
would like to practice. It is not necessary to pause
the
sound to mark a passage; you can click Mark Pause
Start
and Mark Pause End while the sound is playing.
Play Phrase - Plays first the student's recorded
practice pronunciation, and
then the original sound for comparison.
Record - Turns on the microphone to record the student's
practice
pronunciation.
Scroll bar - Graphically shows the beginning and
end points of the marked
passage. You can click and drag the scroll bar buttons
in
order to adjust the marked passage start and end points.
Range counters - Numerically shows the beginning
and end points of the
marked passage. You can enter new numerical values
in
each range counter by just typing in the text field.
Besides
permitting fine adjustments in a marked phrase start and
end points, teachers or students can jot down the numeric
values to use when they return to practice a specific
phrase
over again.
So, for example, when you enter a prize, try the following:
1) Click the Story button
2) As the sound is playing, click the Mark Phrase Start
button at the
start of a phrase
3) At the end of the phrase, click the Mark Phrase End
button as you hear the end of the phrase
4) Click the Play Phrase button; you should hear
the phrase you marked
5) Adjust the starting and ending points of the phrase
using the scroll bar
and/or range counters
6) Click the record button and record your pronunciation
of the phrase
7) Press the play button to compare your pronunciation
to that of the
original
8) Continue to practice pronouncing the marked passage,
or change the
phrase to another
9) Take pride in your improving your French accent
