Scripture
Helaman 12:15

A solar eclipse took place on Monday, June 10, 2002 in parts of North America.  The moon moved in front of the Sun.  Where we live in the U.S.A., we saw about 70% of the sun covered by the moon.  Other parts of the U.S.A. saw 40%.  My children (4 1/2 and 2 1/2 years old) saw the moon on the "pinhole projector" I made.  I have always heard about a "Solar Eclipse" but I never have seen one before yesterday.  It is an experience I will never forget!

Annular Solar Eclipse: 2002 June 10
Espenak's Eclipse @ NASA of upcoming (and past) eclipses of the sun and moon.

Pinhole Projector
Take a box (shoe box, etc.)  I used a diaper box and cut of the flaps.  The longer the box is, you will be able to see a larger image of the sun.  You can tape a couple of boxes together if you want.
Tape a white piece of paper on the left side of the open side of the box.
On the right side of the box, cut a square out of it.
Tape a piece of aluminum foil on it.
Make a hole in the foil using a pin.
Aim the box to the sun and you can see the sun on the white paper.
Show this to your children or students before the solar eclipse starts.
Tell them NOT to look at the sun, only the dot on the paper.

You Are My Sunshine Song
James (Jimmie) Houston Davis, a governor from Louisiana and Charles Mitchell wrote a song in 1940 about the “sunshine”.  He was born on September 11, 1899, in Quitman, Louisiana.  (Locate this on a map.)  Can you name a song that has the word “sunshine” in it?  (Yes.  “You Are My Sunshine”.)    (Hum part of the song if the child/ren can not guess what song it is.)  This song is one of Louisiana two state official songs.  The other official song of Louisiana is “Give me Louisiana” written by Doralice Fontane.
