16 Bay RAID 5/6 Rack Mount SATA Enclosure
The DAT Optic RM16_EX8 Sixteen Bay, PCIe Extender RAID Storage System

DAT Optic Inc. is shipping the sixteen bay RM16_EX8 ($4,995) PCIe RAID 5/6 3U rack mount enclosure for SATA hard disks. This product includes an 8x PCIe extender card that allows the RAID controller to be installed inside the enclosure. The configuration that AMUG received includes a sixteen channel Areca ARC-1261ML SATA controller. The hard disk backplane found inside the enclosure can support 3.5" SATA or SAS hard drives using an internal direct connect design. However, as the Areca ARC-1261ML controller only supports SATA hard disks the stock RM16_EX8 configuration will not support SAS. If the user selects the "128 HDD Expansion" option ($199) the controller card is upgraded to a SAS controller which provides SAS expander support.

The RM16_EX8 measures 24" deep, 5.2" high and 19" wide. The enclosure weighs approximately 33.5 pounds when empty and 57 pounds with sixteen hard disks installed. It is compatible with computers equipped with an 8x (or higher) PCIe expansion slot. The purpose of this review is to determine how the RM16_EX8 performs with an Apple Mac Pro.

System Requirements
Requires a computer with an 8x (or higher) PCIe expansion slot.
Supports up to sixteen external 3.5" SATA hard disks.
128 HDD Expansion option available for SAS compatibility.
