4 Channel External RAID 5 PCIe SAS Controller
A Review of the HighPoint RocketRAID 2644X4 PCI-Express SAS/SATA RAID Controller
HighPoint Technologies Inc. is shipping the RocketRAID 2644X4 PCI-Express 4x SAS RAID controller ($199). The four channel external mini-SAS (SFF-8088) interface provided by the RocketRAID 2644X4 supports up to four direct connect SAS/SATA hard disks or up to 128 disks with the use of SAS expanders. The controller supports RAID levels 0, 1, 5, 10 or JBOD and offers hot spare support. The RocketRAID 2644X4 provides a low cost, high performing, SAS RAID controller optimized for performance driven media applications. The purpose of this article is to determine how the HighPoint RocketRAID 2644X4 will perform with the Apple Mac Pro.
The RocketRAID 2644X4 includes a browser-based management tool for easy RAID configuration. The controller features an alarm and SMTP email notification should a hard disk failure occur. When configured with an external mini-SAS (SSF-8088) to Infiniband cable, the RocketRAID 2644X4 can be used with a 4-bay direct connect enclosure like the PROAVIO EditBOX EB4-ML.
The HighPoint RocketRAID 2644X4 is a nice performing, RAID 5, SAS controller with a very reasonable price. Macintosh compatible SAS RAID controllers have been restricted to the $500 to $900 price range prior to the introduction of the RocketRAID 2644X4. Apple Mac Pro users looking for an inexpensive four channel SAS controller option will find the RocketRAID 2644X4 provides an excellent value.
