My
E9th Set-up:
My
E9th setup is fairly straight ahead with a few interesting
twists (pulls):
The outside left-knee-left raises the 4th string
a whole tone. It's a little awkward but it sure
sounds pretty. I got the idea after seeing Tom Brumley
at Jeff Newman's June Jam back in '91. I think the
effect is similar to Paul Franklin's 4th pedal except
it works the other way around. Here's
an example (208k.wav).
The right-knee-right lowers the 8th string a whole
tone for some nice dominant 7th passing chords and
2/5 turnarounds. Here's an example
(216k.wav).
I play a 1991 Mullen D-10 through a Fender '59 Bassman
with a 15" JBL. The only outboard effect is a cheap
little Arion SAD-1 stereo analog delay. I know everybody
uses a Boss DD-3 or a rack of some kind, but this
little baby is real sweet and warm.
I've also got a '70s Emmons S-10 double frame push-pull
with a wooden neck and lacquer finish. It's definitely
got the old sound! Whenever I fall in a playing
rut (pretty often), I switch to the Emmons for a
reality check. It always works! The sound and playability
is so different from the Mullen that it always makes
me play something new.
Right now I'm using a 1-inch thick bar and George
L strings. The 1-inch bar gives great tone and sustain
but can get real tricky when you're shattering glass.

Lee's Steel Guitar Pages for other tunings and
set-ups.
