Lesson Objectives:
- Review how to prevent fires
- Review proper procedures for leaving a home or building if a fire
takes
place
Lesson Sequence:
- Group: Have the students in the front of the classroom sitting on
the
floor.
- Review fire safety: How can we prevent fires?
Rules
to
Prevent
Fires:
1.
Never
play with matches!
2.
Never
play with lighters!
3.
Never
touch a hot burner!
4.
Check
smoke detectors regularly!
- Group: Review the proper procedures for leaving a house or a
building
if a fire takes place
Procedures
in
Case
of a Fire:
1.
What
do you do, if your clothes are on fire? "Stop, Drop, & Roll".
2.
Fire
breaks out, alert others by shouting "Fire!" or sounding an alarm.
3.
Smell
smoke: Drop down and quickly crawl to an exit.
4.
Go
to the first door! Open only if it is not hot!
5.
Follow
your best escape route as quickly as possible. Meet other family
members outdoors.
6.
Call
9-1-1 from a neighbor's house.
- Go back to your desks quietly.
- Write the rules we have listed on the board on strips of paper.
- Note: If you teach younger children that can not read or
write,
have pictures of the rules.
- Make "rescue dogs"
How
to
make
"Rescue Dogs":
1.
On
the envelope, make face with pencil; eyes, nose, mouth, and tongue.
2.
Put
already cut triangles on the side of the dog (these will be the
ears
of the dog).
3.
Make
thumb prints around your dogs face.
4.
Let
the dog dry on your desk.
5.
Wash
your hands with soap and water.
Conclusion:
- If you have time, read a book about firemen, fire trucks,
etc.
This lesson can be done an hour before school ends. Before the
students
leave the classroom to go home, place a badge on each child.
Resources:
- tempera paint
- strips of paper
- palette for each table
- envelopes
- cut triangles for dogs ears
- slips of paper
- red badges that says "Junior. Fire Department" or "Sergeant.
