Activity: Teaching a song

Target Grade Level: K - 3rd; maybe younger

Anticipated Length of Lesson: 10 minutes

Classroom Topic:  Global Awareness - Nature is Everywhere

Musical Objectives: At the end of this activity the students will:

-sing a song by rote

-improvise on a xylophone and using body parts.

Musical Concept:  Repetition in music

Musical Skills:  Singing and Playing an instrument

Lesson Sequence

1. Anticipatory Set:

What happens when it gets cloudy outside? Yes, it rains! Today we are going to learn a song about rain in English and Spanish.


There are various versions of the song,  ¡Que llueva!  Use the one you like the most.

Literal Translation:

It's raining, it's pouring;
The old man is snoring.
He went to bed and he
Bumped his head
And he couldn't get up in the morning.

2. Sing the entire song for the children.

3. Sing each line of the song and ask the children to echo you.

4. Sing two lines together and ask the children to echo you.

5. Sing the entire song and ask the children to sing it back to you.

6. "Now, we are going to add some instruments in with the song." Have some children make pitter-pat sounds on the xylophone using the pitches C D E G A. "What else could make the sound of rain?" (tongue clicking, finger snapping, etc. Have the other students make those sounds as you sing the song; maybe have some other students sing the song with you.

7. Closure:  "Today, we have learned a song about rain. What is the word for "It's raining!" in Spanish?" (If you have access to the Spanish version of the song.) "Yes, Que llueva! What instruments did we use to make rain sounds with? What other things did we use to make rain sounds with?"
