Art
Presidents Silhouette's (Washington, Lincoln, etc.)
You can do Washington and Lincoln Silhouette's on their birthday or on President's Day on the same piece of paper.  You can do the other two presidents on their birthdays or do them on President's Day.

Use a piece of black construction paper.  Place a coin underneath, and hold it (or tape it down for younger children).  With a white crayon, rub each president(s) as many times as you want.  (Make sure you get the entire coin.)

President's Day Coin Rubbing Math Activity (Washington, Lincoln, etc.)
Place a coin underneath your paper (heads up).  Hold the coin (or tape it down for younger children).  With a crayon, rub each president(s) as many times as you want.  (Make sure you get the entire coin.)  On the bottom of the paper, draw a line.  Count your coin rubbings (money) together.  Write the total amount of money on the line.

Math & Physical Education
President's Day Coin Toss Activity
Toss a coin into a box, empty egg carton, on the floor, etc.  (You can use a penny, nickel, dime, or quarter-depending on which president you are talking about.)  On a piece of paper, keep tally of how many times it lands heads or tails.  Graph the results on paper.

Math
Counting Money Activity

Practice counting money using different coins and dollar bills.

Coin Sort
Sort and stack coins in the correct pile (pennies, quarters, etc).  Count the piles.

George Washington

George Washington was the 1st president of the United States.  He was born on February 22, 1732.  Go to Just the Arti-FACTS - George Washington (including paintings and other images) and The Life of George Washington to learn more about Washington.  It isn't know what George Washington's favorite food was but there is a Cranberry Pudding recipe at George Washington and Food.  His picture is on the quarter.  It is known that George Washington cut down a cherry tree but that story isn't true.  He loved trees. The Liberty Bell was last rung on February 23, 1846 for George Washington's birthday celebration.

Abraham Lincoln

Abraham Lincoln was the 16th President of the United States.  He was born on February 12, 1809.  His picture is on the penny.  He married Mary Todd. One of Mr. Lincoln's favorite foods was Mary Todd White Almond Cake.  (I guess his wife created this recipe since it is named after her).  Another food Lincoln liked was Fricasseed Chicken.  Go to Touring Mr. Lincoln's House A U.S. National Historic Site to learn more about Mr. and Mrs. Lincoln's house (and ones they lived in when they grew up).  It was the only house Mr. Lincoln and his wife owned.  It was in Springfield, Illinois.  He was assassinated in 1865.  Visit, Springfield Illnois '99... Here are some activities you can do for the week of President's Day; which is February 17, 2003.

Questions
How many pennies make a (nickel, dime, quarter, dollar, ...)? (5, 10, 25, 100,...)

Books

Activity & Snack
Put some frosting on a graham cracker (or a small piece of cardboard).  Place some frosting on each stick pretzel and build you log cabin. After you are done, you can eat it.

Game
Take a lot of stick pretzels.  Try to build a log cabin without letting any of the logs (pretzels) fall.  You can time to see how long it takes to build a house.  Eat the pretzel when you are done (make sure to wash your hands before you build the log cabin).

Science
A penny gets dirty because copper reacts with oxygen (which in the air).

Clean a Dirty Penny

Ages: Preschool and Older

Materials Needed:
Dirty (brown) pennies
Different solutions: Condiments (ketchup, mustard, pickle juice, vinegar); soda pop, different fruit juices (lemon, orange, apple, etc.); water; salt, baking soda  
(For older children through adult: You can use other solutions that younger children should not use.)
Mixing instrument: spoon, chop stick, etc.
Small paper plates, bowls, or other containers
Paper towels
Place different solutions on a plate or in a bowl (for liquid solutions).  Label the plate or bowl (each solution).  Predict which one will clean better.  Experiment with each substance by placing the penny into the substance.  Mix it and let it set for awhile if needed. Wash off the penny.  Dry the penny off with a paper towel.  Repeat for each solution, if desired.

Try mixing some solutions together.  
1.  Place some vinegar into a bowl. Place a dirty penny into the bowl.  Does it change?  Add some salt.  Mix.  Rinse off.  Dry with a paper towel.  
2.  Place some water into a bowl.  Place a dirty penny into the bowl.  Does it change?  Add some baking soda to it.  Mix.  Rinse off. Dry with a paper towel.  

During the science experiment, answer the following questions (Record on a piece of paper):
1.  What happened to the penny (Did it become shiny or stay dull)?
2.  Which solution cleaned the penny best?
3.  For older children through adult, Why did this happen?

Thomas Jefferson was born on April 13, 1743, in Shadwell, Virginia.  He was the third president of the United States.  He wrote the Declaration of Independence and the Statute of Virginia for Religious Freedom.  He died July 4, 2826, in Monticello.  His picture is on the nickel.  One food he introduced to the United States was macaroni.  He invented the Mold-Board Plow.  (You can see a drawing at Examples of Jeffersonian Mathematics.)
