Snow Science
Talk about snow:  Where does snow comes from?  Snow comes from the clouds.  When the air is too cold ?, the water comes out of the clouds and it turns into snow (snowflakes).

Dramatic Play
Pretend snowflakes are coming out of the sky.  Wiggle your fingers.
Catch some snowflakes with your tongue.

Pretend to have a snowball fight, build a snowman, etc.

Outside Snow Activities
Make foot prints (of course, with shoes or boots on your feet) pointing “in” and “out”.
Make snow angels using your arms and legs.
Make a snowman.
Catch snowflakes with your tongue.
Snow Brick Fort

Science Activity
Frozen Ice Activity
Place different objects from a nature walk (leaves, twigs, rocks, etc.) into various sizes of containers.  Place some water in them.   Ask the child/ren to predict what will happen?  Freeze over night.

What did this make? (ice)  Take the ice out (run warm water on the bottom of the container.  Let it melt in a larger container or tray.  Predict, how long did it take each ice cube to melt.  Observe the ice.  Did it take less time for the bigger or the smaller containers?

Math/Physical Education
Snow/Snowman Math
In an empty egg carton, place numbers on the bottom of the cups.  Have the children place the correct number of pom poms or cotton balls in each cup.

Snowball Prediction
Place a number of cotton balls or pom poms in a container.  Have the children predict how many you placed in the container.  Have the children count the objects  you placed in the container to see how close his/her prediction was.

Snowball Count
Hand-eye Correlation
Place some cotton balls or pom poms in a container.  Have the child move the objects into another container with large tweezers or another.  Have them count as they do it.

Snowball Sock Toss
Use rolled up white socks.  Have the child toss as many as s/he can into a box, through a hole in a box, etc.  Count how many socks you make (For younger children: have the child count as s/he tosses).

Snowball Toss
If you live where it snows, you can do have the child toss snowballs at each other.  Count how many snowballs you throw.

Craft
Snowman Craft
Make three sizes of circles. It doesn't have to be white paper.  (You can use various containers for templates: oatmeal, margarine, etc.) Glue on paper shapes (circles, triangle), twigs, buttons, rick rack, lace, etc.   Use crayons, colored pencils, markers to decorate your snowman.

Snacks/Home Economics
-Make snowball cookies, donut holes, or ball sopaipillas.  Cover them with powdered sugar.
(You can also purchase powdered sugar donuts.)
-Make chocolate or spice cupcakes.  (Go to The Pratt Family Cookbook to find some recipes.)
-Take a small paper snowflake, place it above the cupcake.  Sift powdered sugar over the snowflake.  (You can use paper ones you buy in the store (the ones that are used for decorations under desserts).
-Make snowman biscuits.  Connect three biscuit circles together.  Place various food items on the snowman (raisins, etc.)  Bake.
-Make snowman cookies.  Connect three circle cookie doughs together.  Place various food items on the snowman (raisins, sugar, etc.) Bake.

Math & Craft Activity
Paper Snowflakes
Math Concepts: Symmetry and Fractions

Fold a piece of paper to make a square.  (It will look like a triangle before you fold it out.)
(You can get two squares out of a piece of paper or one big snowflake out of a piece of paper.)
Cut it along the straight part of the piece of paper.
Fold the paper in half again.
Using scissors, create your own design.

Ask, what do you see in your snowflake?  Is it the same?  This is called: symmetry.
