Calendar Time

Make lots of clouds and rain drops out of construction paper.  (Write weather vocabulary words on them.)  Laminate.  Place them on the wall (or bulletin board).

Weather Chart @ TipzTime Circle the picture that represents the type of weather for each day of the week.

Weather Discussion
The weather can be very calm (like a lamb) or it can be strong (like a lion).  Make those animal sounds.

Ask the children what this quote means: "In like a lion, out like a lamb" or "In like a lamb, out like a lion".  The weather in March can begin very bad (furious) just like a lion and the month will end very calm (or gentle) like a lamb or it can begin very calm (or gentle) and end very bad (furious) like a lion.  

Make those animal sounds.  

Talk about lightening, thunder, hurricanes, tornados, etc.

Talk about the different types of weather: sunny, cloudy, windy, rainy.  The rain and wind can be calm or strong (heavy).

Weather Vocabulary
Younger Children: cloud, colors, dry, fog, rain, rainbow, sky, sun, wet, wind, ...
Older Children: cloudy, foggy, lightening, rainbow, rainy, sunny, thunder, windy, weather, ...

Drama
Pretend to be wind. Whistle (blow out) lightly, heavier, heavier, softer (or the other way around).  Sway (move) you head and body back and forth like the wind.

Pretend to be rain.  With your fingers, make them move rain falling down: lightly, heavier, heavier, softer (or the other way around).  
(You can do it on a table or book.)

Pretend to be thunder.  Make soft, louder, louder thunder.

Music
What's the Weather?
After singing the above song, go outside and see what the weather is like.

Poem
For older children, read the poem March Winds @ lds.org.

Games
These can be file folder games or placed on the wall.

If you do them as file folder games:
- Laminate the file folder (at least put some clear laminate paper where the tape (or magnet strips or velcro will be placed).
- Write the name of the game (and picture of a cloud, rain drop, or sun) on the flap.  (You can write the directions on the front of the file folder.)
- Glue an envelope on the front of the file folder (under the name of the game).  Place the cards inside there.  
Another option: Hole punch two holes in the back of a small sealable bag.  Place a piece of yarn through it.  Tie off on the front of the file folder.  Place the cards into the bag.
Place double sided tape in the inside part of a file folder.  Place the cards on the tape.


Weather Math Game or Weather Math File Folder Game
Make a number of clouds.  Place addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division problems on the clouds.  e.g. 1+1= , 2+1=, 2+2=, ...
Make lots of rain drops.   On some rain drops, place the answer on each one. e.g. 2, 3, 4,...
Laminate the rain drops and clouds.
Have the children place the correct rain drops on the correct cloud.
You can have a sheet of paper where they can write the math problem and then the answer or you can have an answer sheet in an envelope nearby.  Have them check their answers (make sure they know not to look at it before they are done).

Weather Math Game
Do the above, except have a cup or an empty margarine container with the cloud on each one.  Have the children place the correct raindrops in the correct cup or container.  You can have a sheet of paper where they can write the math problem and then the answer or you can have an answer sheet in an envelope nearby.  Have them check their answers (make sure they know not to look at it before they are done).

Rainy Number Game or Rainy Number File Folder Game
Make a number of rain drops.  On one set, write the number on each rain drop and the other set write the word number.  Laminate.  Have the child match the correct number with the word number.

Rainy Alphabet Game or Rainy Alphabet File Folder Game
Make a number of rain drops.  On one set, write the lower case letters on each rain drop and the other set write the uppercase letters.  Laminate.  Have the child match the correct lowercase letters with the uppercase letters.

Sunny Number Game or Sunny Number File Folder Game
Make a number of yellow suns.  On one set, write the number on each sun and the other set write the word number.  Laminate.  Have the child match the correct number with the word number.

Sunny Alphabet Game or Sunny Alphabet File Folder Game
Make a number of rain drops.  On one set, write the lower case letters on each rain drop and the other set write the uppercase letters.  Laminate.  Have the child match the correct lowercase letters with the uppercase letters.

Cloud Experiment

Absorb: Talk about clouds (size, color, etc).  Take a sponge and place it into water.  Ask the children what it is doing? (soaking up the water; absorbing the water).  Squeeze the sponge.  Let all the water come out.  It is like on a rainy day, the water comes out of the cloud...

Look at the clouds and talk about them.

Cloud Snacks / Home Economics
Pop some popcorn.  Look at them while they pop.  Do they look like fluffy white clouds?

Cloud Craft
Glue cotton balls onto the top of a piece of paper.  Make some scenery underneath the clouds.
Paint or draw your some clouds onto a piece of paper.  Make some scenery underneath the clouds.

Little Cloud Activities
1.  If the weather permits, stand outside and look at the clouds or look through the window. What do the clouds look like to you?  Can you see a ... (rabbit, etc.)? Clouds can be different colors. They can be white when there is no water inside of they or they can be gray.  When they are gray, there is a lot of water inside of them.  What comes out of the clouds when they are too full?  (Rain.)  Have the children move their fingers like raindrops.  Have them move their fingers faster and faster.

3.  Craft: Make rain sticks or a cloud craft.

4.  Draw your own clouds in the shape you want.  Glue them onto a sky blue piece of paper (or color or paint the paper sky blue).

I’ll Play With You Activities
1.  Make shadows outside.
2.  Whistle like the wind.  Run in the wind (or no wind).
3.  Science: Look at the clouds in the sky.  See if you can see objects in the clouds.
4.  Pretend to jump in puddles (or in real puddles).
5.  Craft: Make a rainbow craft. 
6.  Home Economics: Make a rainbow snack.  Or make star sugar cookies
7.  Science: Count as many stars as you can in the sky.
8.  Music: Sing Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star.
9.  Science & Math: Look at the moon.  How much of the moon can you see? (full, half, third, quarter, ...)
