Power Book Users Resource. A local company "PowerBook Parts" of Mesa has many parts for older PowerBooks Wallstreet G3s etc. If you are a PowerBook G3 user you may know of or have experienced the failure of the hinge (clutch housing) that holds the display to the PowerBook body. Apple has been very reluctant to replace the item.. PowerBook Parts has designed and manufactured new stronger Wallstreet clutch housings from steel -- not pot metal, like the original part. This same clutch housing can be used on the 12.1-inch, 13.3-inch and 14.1-inch units. They will rebuild both hinges. Their normal turn-around time is less than 48 hours. You must send in the Powerbook for this service -- no exceptions . There are additional charges if parts are missing. Installation of this item requires custom made tools, and special techniques. They will not sell the parts to do the rebuilds under ANY circumstances. This rebuild can only be done on complete and functional PowerBooks. The company as sells DVD drives, hard drives, PowerBook boards and many other mechanical items of the computer. Backing Up Your Internet Files In addition to making backups of your important documents, there are other things that you should preserve such as your e-mail files, browser bookmarks and address books. If you use Netscape, make a backup of these two folders which you'll find in the Preferences folder within the System Folder: Netscape Users Netscape Folder If you use Internet Explorer , backup the "Explorer"and "Explorer Control" folder in your System Folder, and the "Microsoft User Data" folder in your Documents folder. Preserve your Internet settings These are one-time backups, unless you change your Internet Service Provider. Open your Remote Access control panel. Press the Caps Lock key on your keyboard, then Option-Shift-4. A round cursor will appear. Position it in the Remote Access window and click the mouse button. You'll hear the sound of a camera shutter. You've taken a "screen shot." You'll find a file named "Picture 1" in your System Folder. If you double-click this file it will open in Simple Text. What you've preserved are the User Name required by your Internet Service Provider and the phone number your modem must dial to connect to the Internet. A password line also appears but it will be full of bullets. You should memorize your password or write it down somewhere where it is safe. Next, open the TCP/IP control panel and take a screen shot of it, too. You will have captured all the arcane numbers that must be entered in the control panel to enable you to get online. STARTUP KEYBOARD SHORTCUTS This is by no mean complete, nor do all these keys work on every model of Macintosh with every System version. Nonetheless, it should give you a solid reference for increasing productivity (use both hands, not just the mouse!) and some troubleshooting tips. Hold down the keys until you get the cue indicated in parentheses. FORCE-QUITTING KEY COMBINATIONS |
